What does it mean to be a family?
Long gone are the days when a family was typical mom, dad, and two kids. I personally celebrate that it’s gone and embrace all the differences that are today’s family. I believe a family can be anything you want it to be. It can be something that you didn’t expect to find and it can come in any shape and size.
I’m sure David and I look like your fairly typical family — we’ve have been married for almost 23 years with kids. But, one of our “kids” is my niece, not actually my daughter. While I’m sharing that here, you probably wouldn’t know otherwise. We are proud to fill the roles of parent in her life and we know she’s just as happy to have us. Sure, we are still biologically connected, but it’s still one example that there is all different kind of families.
We also have a daughter that is gay and while she hasn’t had children or settled down yet, I look forward to the day when I get to meet that special someone who she will create her own family with. I can’t wait to see how our family evolves as all of our children venture out into this big world.
This week, I had the special opportunity to be one of the first people to view the trailer for the upcoming movie, Delivery Man – even before it was released to the public. In the movie, Vince Vaughn (one of our favorites) is a guy looking for his purpose in life. One day, he finds out that he’s the biological father to 533 kids, due to donations he made at a fertility clinic.
The story seems crazy and I have to say that when I first read the synopsis, I was a bit skeptical. But after seeing the trailer, I really can’t wait for it to be released. It’s clearly got the things I enjoy in a movie: comedy, heartfelt moments, a chance to learn something…and most importantly: family.
